Duncan Community Resources of Interest to Seniors

Duncan Community Resources of Interest to Seniors

February 4th, 2022

Duncan, BC, is a beautiful, little town—technically, the smallest city in Canada—that is on the southern end of Vancouver Island, about half way between Nanaimo and Victoria. Duncan has a large indigenous influence because it is the traditional home to the Cowichan Tribes. This influence is readily visible throughout Duncan, where many totems may be seen.

There are many advantages to living in Duncan, including its mild weather, which usually stays above freezing in the winter, and is warm but not too hot in the summer. In this blog article, we wanted to talk about some of the community resources in Duncan that may be of interest to seniors.

The Farmers Market

Who doesn’t love a great farmers market? Duncan has one downtown that is open every Saturday all year round. Don’t worry—there’s a hand sanitizer station that is easily accessible. One can buy everything from organic produce to jewellery, and it is a fun place to visit even you don’t want to buy anything.

Volunteer Cowichan

There is a non-profit organization called Volunteer Cowichan that can help you to find a great place to volunteer. If you are looking for a meaningful regular activity, Volunteer Cowichan is great resource.

Valley Senior Centre

There is an excellent senior centre for those 55 and above. They have a busy calendar of activities, meals, and it is also a great social outlet for local seniors. They charge a modest, yearly membership fee of $25.

These, above, are just a few of many resources available. There is the BC Forest Discovery Centre that is just off the highway. This is a fascinating 100-acres, open-air museum that you can visit or even volunteer there. There are other organizations—too many to list here--to suit everyone’s tastes and interests.

Duncan is a beautiful seaside community where we recently built a brand-new assisted-living and complex-care community. We encourage you to come and see why Duncan is such a special place to live.
